The USS USS Invincible' (NCC-88777) was the prototype of the Invincible-class Federation Fleet Carrier-Battleship hybrid classified as a "super capital starship" in the late 24th century. The Invincible was launched from the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in 2384, along with the other flagships that lead the Vanguard Fleet, and was commissioned in 2385.

Shakedown Cruise[]

In 2384 Captain Chakotay was asked to take a one-year sabbatical from his command assignment onboard the USS Voyager by Fleet Admiral Leonard James Akaar who personally asked this of him. He had been singularly chosen by Starfleet Command, on recommendations from Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway, to head the shakedown cruise of the newly launched Invincible-class Fleet Carrier-Command Battleship prototype USS USS Invincible'. Captain T'Pral, the daughter of Ambassador Spock and Captain Saavik, was also assigned to the shakedown cruise as "second" to Chakotay.

The shakedown cruise took six months to complete. It was shorter than the usual, but considering the prevailing situation in the Alpha Quadrant, Starfleet Command wanted the prototype and all newly launched capital starships to be commissioned and fully operational as soon as possible.

Also on hand in the shakedown cruise was Captain Charles Otieno, a seasoned and well-decorated tactical fighter pilot. While it was Chakotay's task to test the space-worthiness of the starship, it was Otieno’s responsibility to make sure that the Tactical Fighter Group embarked on the Invincible was as ready as the ship itself.

Task force shakedown cruise[]

When Vanguard Command was to be formed, Fleet Admiral Maximus Hunter was in a dilemma on who should lead and man what was intended to become the foremost task force of the Vanguard Fleet, Task Force Invincible. Only one name was in mind when it came to abilities, experience and savvy – Jean-Luc Picard. But Picard was at that time most contented and already quite busy as commanding officer of the USS Enterprise-E and its small battle group. Hunter knew that it would be next to impossible to pry Picard out of the Enterprise-E. For all intents and purposes, there was no need at all for Picard to relinquish such a prestigious and already satisfying post.

So Hunter devised a plan that would somehow make Picard think twice about rejecting the offer of commanding Task Force Invincible and the USS Invincible' herself. Since Task Force Enterprise had been placed under Vanguard Command as its exploratory unit, Hunter gave all the crews of the task force a one-month shore leave on Station Frontier, with the exception of Picard and a few of his senior officers and staff who had already been eyed for transfer to the Invincible with him. On the pretext that Task Force Invincible urgently needed a thirty-day shakedown cruise as a unit, Hunter assigned this responsibility to Picard. And Picard was indeed overwhelmed by what he had initially seen.

Onboard as observers of the shakedown cruise were some of the most famous former captains of Starfleet alive: Benjamin Sisko, James Kirk, William Riker, Elizabeth Shelby, Kathryn Janeway, Mackenzie Calhoun, Kira Nerys and other prospects for command positions in Vanguard Command.

Hunter did not make the command offer to Picard outright during the shakedown cruise. Instead, on the third week of that cruise, the task force used the quantum slipstream drive and traveled well inside the Delta Quadrant for a quick reconnaissance mission. He had recently received intelligence reports that the Borg had merged with rogue factions of the Founders and have been amassing a large fleet as its first wave, with plans to send it towards the Alpha Quadrant in a few months. Hunter had anticipated that Picard would come face-to-face with this new threat and would be forced to make a critical decision when the offer to command the task force was given.

It was at this point that Hunter formally offered permanent command of the task force to Picard, highlighting the fact that Starfleet would be hard-pressed against this new threat and that there was no one else of his caliber that Starfleet could give command of Task Force Invincible to without risking the destruction of the Federation.

Understanding the wisdom of Hunter's words, Picard accepted the offer. Jean-Luc Picard was subsequently reinstated to active duty as an Admiral and formally assumed the position of Commanding Officer of the USS Invincible, as well as Flag Officer-in-Command of Task Force Invincible.

His first action as CO of the USS Invincible' was to choose his XO. Picard offered the position of ship's Executive Officer to Captain Norodin Khan, the position of Second Officer to Captain T'Pral and the position of Fighter Group Command Officer to Captain Charles Otieno, respectively. All three accepted.

Vanguard Command[]

When the USS Invincible' finished its shakedown cruise, it officially assumed its role as flagship of the Vanguard Fleet and of its lead task force, Task Force Invincible, composed of seventy (70) combat-oriented starships. Station Frontier was designated as its home port and headquarters.

The USS Invincibles capabilities included:

Offensive capabilities[]

Defensive capabilities[]

  • Enhanced and redundant structural integrity fields, which exponentially increased the ship's ability to maintain the integrity and shape of hulls and bulkheads against the extreme stresses caused by warp fields, weapons, and other motion.
  • Ablative hull armor which rapidly dissipates the energy impacts from directed energy weapon fire and makes the ship endure massive weapons fire even after its shield have been overpowered.
  • Regenerative, redundant, reinforced, multi-phasic, multispectrum and unimatrix defensive shields, which protects the ship from energy weapons and torpedoes for an exponentially longer duration and which makes the ship's hull capable of withstanding extremes of temperature and pressure.
  • Microdiffracted carbon hull coating, which absorbs all visible radiation that fell upon the ship's hull, making it as black as the space it moved through.
  • A sensor stealth system, which masked the ship's warp signature and helped avoid detection during covert operations. Custom-designed warp coil insulators reduced its energy signature almost to nil. As long as radio silence was maintained, the ship could cruise unnoticed through interstellar space.
  • Advanced external holographic emitters, which give the ship the ability to alter its appearance by disguising itself as another object, such as an asteroid.

Propulsion capabilities[]

  • Enhanced impulse engines that can attain sub-light velocities of 0.95c and faster-than-light velocities of Warp 1.2.
  • An enhanced maneuvering thruster array with retro-thrusters which exponentially increase the ship's agility despite its size.
  • A Khronnian enhanced warp drive that allows it to travel at a normal cruise speed of Warp 8.5 and a top sustained speeds of Warp 9.5.
  • A quantum slipstream drive that allows the ship to travel 300 light years in an hour.

Other capabilities[]

Embarked escort ships[]

The USS Invincible has a standard complement of six embarked escort ships. The two Defiant-class escorts are embarked through recessed docking ports on the underside of the ship's dorsal superstructure and mission pod, while the four Valiant-class escorts have dedicated spaces in the large hangar bay located aft of the saucer section, above the third flight deck of the ship and located between the two large impulse engines. These are:

Auxiliary crafts[]

The USS Invincible was equipped with a complement of 48 auxiliary crafts of varying types, with support facilities for all. These are:

Task Force Invincible[]

The USS Invincible and its task force patrol the area of Federation space along the borders facing the galactic core, as well as the meridians between the Alpha Quadrant and Gamma Quadrant and between the Beta Quadrant and Delta Quadrant, and also Federation co-controlled space in the Gamma Quadrant and Delta Quadrant.

As flagship of the Vanguard Fleet and Task Force Invincible, it leads over 450 starships in fleet formation and 70 other combat-equipped starships during task force formations. Outside of task force formations, she was always accompanied by a permanently attached escort complement of two Defiant-class Tactical Frigates and four Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes.

Condition green[]

Under Condition Green, the USS Invincible' travels separately from the rest of its task force and is escorted by two Defiant-class Tactical Frigates and four Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes, which are its embarked escort ships.

Special Missions[]

During very critical situations where the fleet's task forces were needed near to their respective headquarters, the USS Invincible and its companion ships form a 23-ship temporary battle group with Task Force Resilient, Task Force Rogue and four of the fastest starships from the Rapid Reaction Force to complete these missions. In these missions, Fleet Admiral Maximus Hunter has strategic command, while Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, Rear Admiral James T. Kirk and Captain Hakeem Majors have tactical command over their respective units. This temporary battle group was designated as Task Force Vanguard.

Meanwhile, strategic command over the the rest of the task forces of the Vanguard Fleet was in the hands of Admiral John Blackbull. He not only provides oversight to all fleet movements from Vanguard Command headquarters at Station Frontier, he also monitors the movements of this temporary battle group as well.

Though operating as one unit, the four components of this battle group operate on separate aspects of the mission.
