Task Force Dauntless was one of the seven sub-divisions of the Vanguard Fleet, the mobile arm of Vanguard Command. It was commanded by Vice Admiral Razal Gibran. It had as its flagship the Katana-class Command Battleship USS Dauntless.
Task Force Dauntless was the mobile arm of Abraxis Command, which was the field division of Vanguard Command in the Gamma Quadrant and had as its headquarters the Alexandria II-class Station Deep Space Gamma-01, or Station DSG1, which was located around the orbit of Abraxis IV.
Background[]
Among the ranking flag officers recruited into Vanguard Command, Gibran was the very first convinced by Fleet Admiral Maximus Hunter, Flag Officer-in-Command of Vanguard Command, to join the ranks.
Six months prior to 2385, Vanguard Command had identified the Abraxis System as the most viable construction site of the new set of Federation Starfleet facilities in the Gamma Quadrant. This system was rich in dilithium crystals, deuterium and the natural resources to build duranium and tetraburnium alloys for starship hull construction. The Abraxis System was located several light years beyond the Chamra Vortex, which was itself several light years "behind" the event horizon of the wormhole’s Gamma Quadrant terminus. Two of the seven planets and one moon of the Abraxis System were lush class-M planets. However, it lay just outside the borders of the Khronnian race, a technologically advanced and warrior-like but comparatively peaceful race of relatively large humanoids who were later discovered to share a genetic similarity to Klingons. The Khronnians were regarded in the Gamma Quadrant as an interstellar military power. They were governed by the Khronnian Suzerainty.
With the construction of the USS Dauntless completed, the shakedown cruise ongoing, and the wormhole reopened, Admiral Gibran took temporary command of the Defiant-class Tactical Frigate USS Raging Bull and crossed the wormhole en route to Khronnian territory to learn more about their race. He established first contact with the Khronnians, was escorted to Khronnia Prime, capital of the Suzerainty, and was introduced to the suzerain, the feudal ruler of the Khronnian race. After weeks following first contact procedures, Gibran was able to get the consent of the suzerain to use the uninhabited Abraxis System as base of operations of what was later designated Abraxis Command.
Within a week, a fleet of cargo carriers, transport ships, and four Aerie-class support ships, protected by two Defiant-class Tactical Frigates and five Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes, crossed the wormhole under the command of Commodore Leelah Kol, the Trill second-in-command of Admiral Gibran, and delivered all the needed components to build the Alexandria II-class orbital station Deep Space Gamma Zero-One and the planet-side installation Abraxis Base as quickly as possible and the personnel to operate them.
The cargo carriers and transport ships continued to ferry components and raw material back and forth across the wormhole before the completion of both the orbital station and planet-side base, which were constructed in a record time of six months. The Starfleet and Federation crews of the station and the base automatically took up their posts after helping to construct the two facilities.
Leaving Commodore Kol in the Gamma Quadrant to supervise the simultaneous construction of Station DSG1 and Abraxis Base, Admiral Gibran quickly returned to the Alpha Quadrant, completed the rest of the shakedown cruise of the USS Dauntless and the ships of Task Force Dauntless, and crossed the wormhole in early 2385.
After getting consent from the Khronnians to build a Federation space station in their territory in the Gamma Quadrant, a series of subspace communication relay stations were laid out between the two openings of the Bajoran wormhole in a nearly straight line. This was accomplished by the USS Brave, a Prometheus-class Assault Cruiser outfitted with a new quantum slipstream drive. This allowed both Station Frontier and Starbase 514, the two closest starbases to the borders of the Gamma Quadrant, to communicate directly with Abraxis Command and Task Force Dauntless.
Task force complement[]
Task Force Dauntless has a full complement of forty-six (46) starships, composed of:
Task Force Perseverance[]
A sub-unit of Task Force Dauntless was Task Force Perseverance, which was composed of 10-starships and was given the specific mission of exploring that general area of unexplored space of the Gamma Quadrant located near the Alpha Quadrant borders that was three-quarters of the way rimward from the Galactic Core. It had its own flagship, the Vesta-class Command Cruiser USS Perseverance and its own staging point and frequent port of call, the Fort-class outpost Sub-station Abraxis Five, which was located in the Lokaran Star System, about 500 light years from the farthest borders of the Alliance of Gamma Quadrant Planets.
Task force command officers[]
The following senior Starfleet officers have command posts in Task Force Dauntless:
- Vice Admiral Razal Gibran
- Rear Admiral Adnan Kaplan
- Commodore T'larik (a female Vulcan)
- Captain Mustafa Bauer
- Fleet Captain, Strike Group Two
- Commanding Officer, USS Actium
- Captain Thomas Morgan, Wolf Pack
- Commander Solek (a female Vulcan)
Deployment[]
The starships of Task Force Dauntless were regularly deployed out of Station DSG1 to any reachable point in the Gamma Quadrant.
Before deployment, Admiral Gibran had drilled the officers and crew of the entire task force on tactical movements that were specifically designed by Admiral Hunter for the Gamma and Delta Quadrants, or in anticipation of wars.
In each formation type, the starships were trained to follow a series of defensive patterns when engaged in combat that would allow the ships of each formation to augment each other’s firepower while at the same time strengthening each other’s shields.
Condition green[]
At Condition Green, the task force was divided into permanent squadrons of three starships each, composed of one lead ship and two escort ships. The task force has 13 squadrons in all.
Each squadron would undertake missions of exploration and diplomacy for a duration of about three months, taking a circuitous route across one or more sectors, starting from and ending at the task force's home port, Station DSG1. After each mission, the squadron returns to base for at least two weeks to allow its crews time for shore leave and for needed repairs, resupplies, refits and upgrades to the starships.
While one escort ship would augment the research and exploration abilities of the lead ship, the other escort ship would augment the combat abilities of the lead ship if they are engaged in battle.
Condition yellow[]
At Condition Yellow, the task force was reformed into four mission groups, which still primarily undertake missions of exploration and diplomacy when Vanguard Command was on high alert or when a particular mission group was traveling across more hostile sectors. To easily form these mission groups, squadrons under each mission group operate in sectors that were near each other. Each mission group was composed of between 10 and 11 starships. Each mission group operates separately but in close coordination with one another.
Mission Group Alpha was composed of 10 ships, led by the USS Dauntless and was escorted by the Prometheus-class Assault Cruiser USS Gallant, the Intrepid-class Light Cruiser USS Pursuer, the Saber-class Fast Frigates USS Sentinel and USS Protector, the Defiant-class Tactical Frigates USS Raging Bull and USS Geronimo, and the Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes USS Machete and USS Dagger.
Mission Group Bravo was composed of 10 ships, was led by the Luna-class Heavy Cruiser USS Triton and was escorted by the Akira-class Heavy Cruiser USS Iroquois, the Steamrunner-class Heavy Frigates USS Buccaneer and USS Corsair, the Norway-class Heavy Frigates USS Francia and USS Bohemia, the Intrepid-class Light Cruisers USS Starchaser and USS Pioneer, and the Merian-class Fast Frigates USS Sleuth and USS Ranger.
Mission Group Charlie was composed of 10 ships, was led by the Vesta-class Command Cruiser USS Actium, and was escorted by the Steamrunner-class Heavy Frigates USS Blackbeard, and USS Hornigold, the Intrepid-class Light Cruiser USS Illion, the Saber-class Tactical Frigates USS Phalanx, and USS Guardian, the Merian-class Fast Frigates USS Errant and USS Searcher, and the Defiant-class Tactical Frigates USS Sitting Bull and USS Logan.
Mission Group Delta was composed of 10 ships and was led by the Luna-class Heavy Cruiser USS Europa and was escorted by the Akira-class Heavy Cruiser USS Glaive, the Prometheus-class Assault Cruiser USS Valor, the Norway-class Heavy Frigates USS Mercia and USS Flanders, the Saber-class Tactical Frigates USS Phalanx, and USS Guardian, the Merian-class Fast Frigates USS Sojourner and USS Pilgrim, the Saber-class Fast Frigates USS Cavalier and USS Advocate, and the Defiant-class Tactical Frigates USS Tecumseh, and the USS Lone Horn.
In situations where there was a need to deploy a group of starships larger than a squadron but the security situation in the area does not merit a declaration of Condition Yellow, Admiral Gibran would deploy the task force's Wolf Pack, the Sovereign-class Command Cruiser USS Steadfast and the three Wakizashi-class Destroyers USS Hwarang, the USS Janissary and the USS Rajput to the situation as a rapid response force or mission specialist.
Though part of the task force, the Odyssey-class Command Battleship USS Implacable would generally take solitary missions around the AOR of Abraxis Command that is separate from the task force and its ships. It only assumed the role of alternate flagship to Mission Group Alpha or Task Force Dauntless whenever the USS Dauntless is required to go on a solitary mission itself.
Condition red[]
At Condition Red-1, the task force was reformed into two strike groups and operated specifically to undertake major tactical missions.
Strike Group One was composed of 13 starships, led by the USS Dauntless and escorted by the Luna-class Heavy Cruiser USS Triton, the Akira-class Heavy Cruiser USS Iroquois, the Prometheus-class Assault Cruiser USS Gallant, the Steamrunner-class Heavy Frigates USS Buccaneer and USS Corsair, the Norway-class Heavy Frigates USS Francia and USS Bohemia, the Intrepid-class Light Cruisers USS Illion and USS Pioneer, the Merian-class Fast Frigates USS Sleuth and USS Ranger, the Saber-class Fast Frigates USS Sentinel and USS Protector, the Defiant-class Tactical Frigates USS Raging Bull and USS Geronimo, and the Valiant-class Tactical Corvettes USS Machete and USS Dagger.
Strike Group Two was composed of 13 starships, led by the Vesta-class Command Cruiser USS Actium and was escorted by the Luna-class Heavy Cruiser USS Europa, the Akira-class Heavy Cruiser USS Glaive, the Prometheus-class Assault Cruiser USS Valor, the Steamrunner-class Heavy Frigates USS Blackbeard and USS Hornigold, the Norway-class Heavy Frigates USS Mercia and USS Flanders, the Intrepid-class Light Cruisers USS Pursuer and USS Starchaser Saber-class Fast Frigates USS Phalanx, USS Guardian, USS Cavalier, and USS Advocate, the Merian-class Fast Frigates USS Errant, USS Searcher, USS Pilgrim, and USS Sojourner, and the Defiant-class Tactical Frigates USS Sitting Bull, USS Logan, USS Tecumseh, and USS Lone Horn.
During Condition Red-1, Commodore T'larik, Executive Officer of the USS Dauntless and Deputy Fleet Commander of the task force, would transfer onboard the USS Actium to assume command of Strike Group Two, which was one half of the task force. But when Gibran was not with the flagship, T'larik was in command of Strike Group One, while Captain Mustafa Bauer, Commanding Officer of the USS Actium, would command Strike Group Two as Fleet Captain.
The Sovereign-class Command Cruiser USS Steadfast and its Wolf Pack remain detached and does not appear until its part in the battle plan takes place.
During Condition Red-2 the whole 46-ship task force would operate as one unit with the sole purpose of engaging an enemy fleet in battle.
When a greater hostile force threatens Abraxis Command, Task Force Dauntless would rely on Task Force Belligerent from across the Bajoran wormhole as its primary support.
Task Force Perseverance was expected to return to Station DSG1 once a year for major maintenance, refits, and upgrades to its ships, and for changes to its personnel if needed.
