Special Warfare Operator was a Starfleet enlisted rating exclusive to MACOs. The rating was created following the service's reestablishment in 2379 as a sub-department of Starfleet Security.
Special warfare operators are trained for orbit-to-surface drops, covert operations, and boarding actions against enemy installations and starships. They also prepare landing zones for Starfleet ground invasions.
The name is derived from the 20th century United States Navy, where the rating was given to members of the SEALs, the Navy's principal special operations force.
