The Klingon Empire (TlhIngan Hol: tlhIngan wo') was the official state of the Klingon race. The empire was founded by Kahless the Unforgettable during the 9th century, who united the Klingon people and the Klingon homeworld, Qo'noS. The Klingon Chancellor and High Council led the Empire. Throughout the centuries, the Klingon Empire expanded throughout the Beta Quadrant, conquering numerous systems and species.

History[]

Origin[]

The mytho-historical origin of the Klingon Empire revolves centrally around Kahless. Who emerged as a champion of the people at some point in the 900s, overthrowing the tyrant Molor and becoming the first Emperor. However, conjecturally it's not quite clear if Kahless is implied to have become Emperor of all Qo'noS or just an "Old World" region of the planet as long-range continental and space travel wasn't yet developed or recorded in any known Klingon historical texts of the era.

By the 14th century, the Empire faced one of its biggest threats when a species from the Gamma Quadrant Klingons named the Hur'q invaded Qo'noS. They looted many valuable cultural treasures, including the revered Sword of Kahless, but then left again.

By the early 19th century Qo'noS was considered a resource-poor planet within a modest solar system. With their earliest attempts to achieve space travel the Empire began to seek neighboring societies to annex to expand their power and resources. By the middle of the century, dozens of planets were annexed and subjugated at the point of a sword. And while it appears outwardly that Klingons have a societal crudeness the territories of the Empire are efficiently managed and surprisingly extremely well run.

No star system under their authority has ever broken away from Klingon rule in over two centuries of steady conquest. This is not to say that the member worlds of the Klingon Empire weren't straining at the bit to break away from despotic rule. However, due to the ruthless efficiency and willingness to meet goals at all costs of Klingon military philosophy. The territories and annexed citizens therein of the Empire are consistently fed, housed, and well-provided with resources and general military protection.

And due to this series of Imperial issued benefits regardless if these societies are being abused or mistreated, they have developed a form of tolerance towards the Empire and few would choose to leave, if given the option.

In the mid 21st century, the reign of the last Emperor ended and authority was passed to the Chancellor of the Klingon High Council.

22nd century[]

By the 2150s Klingon governmental order while acting as a union of occupied and allied species called themselves as an Empire truly in name only. In 2154 due to secret military experimentation with Earth based eugenics research to create super soldiers similar to Human Augments of the late 20th to mid 21st century, ended up accidentally creating a super plague that kills millions and rendered over a third of all Klingons on Qo'noS with Human-like physical and Augment like mental traits.

And although the main fault lay with the Empires own genetic researchers for developing the virus in the first place, United Earth and subsequently the Federation are declared enemies of the Klingon state due to their blame for the introduction of Human DNA into the Klingon genome. This hostility between the factions lasts from the late 2260s through most of the 23rd century.

Second Klingon Empire[]

By the early 23rd century Augmented Klingons became pariahs within mainstream society mainly just for their outward Human-like appearance. However able-bodied soldiers were still needed to maintain the expansion of Klingon territories and protection of their military assets.

As such the Order of the Gin'tak was created to provide segregated augments a position within the Klingon Defense Force and a place within the general military, and was advertised to them as an elite paramilitary force equal to that of Starfleets own MACO.

However in reality the division was originally a place to put augmented Klingons that were physically weaker and mentally acted far less honorable than their non-augmented counterparts as cannon fodder in combat situations where soldiers could be considered dispensible.

And by Human standards, these forms of prejudice would be seen as unfair and cruel, many Augments still innately had the trait of a Human Augments sense of superiority and ambition. Secretly many leaders within Klingon Augment society created a cabal to overthrow their non-viral affected contemporaries. The augments hired a Mizarian think tank to create and design new military technologies to overpower the High Council with "Brains over brawn" as the augments while stronger than an average human couldn't physically equal that of a well-trained Klingon warrior.

As such augment revolutionaries developed their own fleet. Purchasing stronger Hadron disintergrators from Hysperian military contractors and producing the strongest military Cruiser of the era, the D7 class.

Augment Coup[]

In 2215 the Augment Coup began with Gin'tak landing forces transporting into the chambers of the High Council. While the council's security forces attempted a valiant effort to defend the chamber. Gin'tak troops utilize portable disintegration field generators that acted similar to the Tantalus field but at a much lower range and yield. Small groups of council security were vaporized with short blasts of the generators.

Others were subdued with stronger disruptor pistols and rifles. By the end of the event, several Great House leaders and over 1000 non-augmented defense troops planetwide fell to the augments superior technology and with no way to quickly counter their attacks the council surrendered and as such the augments publically declared they were now the leaders of an Empire reborn.

Second Imperial Expansion[]

The Augments quickly went to work to demote most of the High Council to figurehead roles so they could be the true ruling power within the Empire. Many Augments wanted the entirety of mainstream Klingon military disbanded or imprisoned for the prejudice and thoughtlessness shown to them. However, the coup leaders realized the Empire still needed an experienced military to continue the protection of the Empire's territories.

So for that period, any non-augmented military divisions were placed as mainly National Guard like defense within the Empire's borders, with only a few relegated to ship lower deck maintenance and remote regimental command for well-regarded veterans.

By 2217 the now fully integrated D7 fleet began the Klingon Empire's largest campaign of expansion never before or after performed by any neighboring military in the quadrant. By the 2240s the Empire increased by several hundred worlds nearly incurring into the territories of Romulan, Tholian, Gorn and at the time was not fully explored Starfleet claimed space.

The process of claiming planets was twofold. The foundation of a Klingon colony could be preceded by bio-surveying potentially suitable planets. For conquered inhabited worlds, the traditional Klingon practice called for the execution of all government officials, and the installation of an Imperial Overseer, e.g., a governor, to put down any further resistance. An alternative approach was the creation of a puppet regime under a native governor.

And while non-augmented Klingons were pleased by their efforts and began to regard them with more respect as augments were seen as incapable of any real military strength. The methods as to how they were achieving this success however will create a political divide that will affect Klingon society and outer societal perception of Klingons for decades to come.

Cultural Divide[]

Omega universe[]

The empire once fought a war against Earth and its allies. However, the bulk of the Klingon army was no match for the resilience of the Human species. Eventually, several colonies were ceded until the Klingon Empire had only a handful of ships and only ten colonies.
