A Frontline Squadron is a made up of anywhere between six and ten Class I Starships. Frontline squadrons were created during the war with the Romulans in order to lend a diverse form of combat squadron. By definition, a squadron is usually (though not always) made up of the same classification of vessel. A given squadron's designation is indicated by an abbreviation that is specific to that type of squadron, followed by a number. For example, the fourth destroyer squadron would be referred to as DESRON-4.
There are nine kinds of squadrons:
- Carrier Squadron (CVS)
- Cruiser Squadron (CAS)
- Combat Squadron (ATS)
- Frigate Squadron (FGS)
- Destroyer Squadron (DESRON)
- Scout Squadron (RESRON)
- Patrol Squadron (PATRON)
- Research Squadron (SCIRON)
- Escort Squadron (ESRON)
