Starfleet Headquarters (San Francisco) and the United Federation of Planets (UFP) Government (Paris) are located on Earth. It is the home planet of the human race, which is one of the main Federation members, alongside Vulcans and, in the 25th century, Klingons. Before Klingons became a Federation member, they were an on-again/off-again ally. The planet was originally named after the goddess Gaia.
In 2270, Yellowstone National Park erupted, which released toxic gas and ash into the atmosphere. Within twelve hours, the entire planet was covered in a cloud of volcanic ash. Shortly thereafter, the USS Discovery and her crew set a course for Gadorian territory to collect warp plasma. The warp plasma was then fired into the sun, which caused solar flares to erupt for only a minute, long enough for the surrounding space to heat up and burn off the ash cloud. In October of 2378, Shinzon of Remus assassinated all of the sitting members of the Imperial Senate of the Romulan Star Empire. Subsequently installing himself as the next Praetor, Shinzon sought revenge against the Romulans for their brutal oppression of the Reman people. Shinzon became the leader of the Reman people, staging a successful coup against the Romulan Senate and plotting the annihilation of Earth in the name of Reman freedom.
In 2598, a Saer'nar cruiser arrived at Earth, with a mission to destroy it, if possible. First, the vessel fired off a weapon which dissipated Earth's atmosphere, before firing again to try to obliterate the planet. Federation forces were fortunately able to destroy the vessel before any further damage was done.
Unfortunately, due to the atmospheric dissipation, all of Earth's twelve billion inhabitants had to be evacuated. As the planet became uninhabitable, Starfleet attempted to rescue as many as possible. With help from the Romulans and the Klingons, over four billion people were taken off of the planet. Within fifty-four hours, the planet had become unsuitable to continue to support human life. The remaining eight billion people left on the surface either perished, or continued to survive in pressure domes. (PIO: "On a Knife Edge")
