Earth is a class-M planet, and homeworld to the Human (or Terran) race. There is one moon in orbit, known as Luna.

Starfleet Headquarters (San Francisco) and the United Federation of Planets (UFP) Government (Paris) are located on Earth. It is the homeplanet of the human race, which is one of the main Federation members, alongside with Vulcans and, in the 25th century, Klingons. Before Klingons became a Federation member, they were an ally. Originally named after the goddess Gaia.

In the 23rd century the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) found a copy of Earth in the Beta Quadrant.

In 2270, Yellowstone National Park erupted releasing toxic gas and ash into the atmosphere and within 12 hours, the entire planet was covered in a cloud of ash. However the USS Discovery and her crew set course for Gadorian territory to collect Warp Plasma, this was then fired into the sun which caused Solar Flares to erupt for only a minute, long enough for the surrounding space to heat up and burn off the ash cloud. In October of 2378 Shinzon of Remus assassinated all of the sitting members of the Imperial Senate of the Romulan Star Empire.Installing himself as the next Praetor,Shinzon sought revenge against the Romulans for their brutal oppression of the Reman people.Shinzon became the leader of the Reman people, staging a successful coup against the Romulan Senate and plotting the annihilation of Earth in the name of Reman freedom.

On New Year's Eve, December 31st, 2406, the Relons attacked and besieged Earth. Twenty billion people died during the invasion.

In 2598, a Saer'nar cruiser arrived at Earth, with a mission to destroy it if possible. First, the vessel fired off a weapon which dissipated Earth's atmosphere, before firing again to try to obliterate the planet. Federation forces were fortunately able to destroy the vessel before any further damage was done.

Unfortunately, due to the atmospheric dissipation, all of Earth's 12 billion inhabitants had to be evacuated. As the planet became uninhabitable, Starfleet attempted to rescue as many as possible. With help from the Romulans and the Klingons, over four billion people were taken off the planet. Within 54 hours, the planet had become unsuitable for human life, and all the remaining eight billion people left there either perished or survived in pressure domes. (PIO: "On a Knife Edge")
