Deep Space 9, or more fondly called DS9, was a Federation space station that became one of the single most strategically, historically, and socially important outposts in the entire Milky Way Galaxy.
Location[]
DS9 was located in the Alpha Quadrant, specifically in the Bajoran System, in the Denorios Belt and near the Bajoran wormhole.

Vanguard Command[]
DS9 was commanded by Commodore Kira Nerys, who was the concurrent Deputy Sector Commander of Denorios Command, under Rear Admiral Benjamin Sisko, who was Sector Commander. It serves as the headquarters of Denorios Command, as well as the official home port and base of operations of Task Force Belligerent and all other Federation starships that may be operating in that area of space, providing docking and repair facilities, not only for ships under Vanguard Command, Starfleet, or the Federation, but to all ships who come in peace and seek such services.

History[]
The station was of Cardassian design, being of the Nor-class of Cardassian space stations, built by Bajoran slave labor between 2351 and 2356. Called Terok Nor by the Cardassians, the station was used for the processing of Uridium ore by Bajoran laborers. After the Cardassian withdrawal in 2369, the provisional government of the newly-established Republic of Bajor petitioned the United Federation of Planets for relief efforts and Federation Member status, and offered to allow Starfleet to administer the station as a starbase, prompting its new designation. In an alternate timeline, the station was heavily damaged during the Second Battle of Bajor during the war with the Klingon Empire and was later scrapped for parts to assist in defence of Bajor.
Original station layout[]
Being a Nor-class space station, the original DS9 was marked by a central core surrounded by two rings, the outermost of which served as the base for six arching docking pylons. The majority of Nor-class stations were designed to support mining and refining operations, though they could be adapted to other purposes.

The original DS9 consisted of three main areas:
- The Central Core which contained the power core, the Promenade and Ops.
- The inner Habitat Ring which provided quarters for crew and visitors and was connected to the rest of the station by large connecting bridges.
- The outer Docking Ring which accommodated numerous small ships and which served as the base for six arching docking pylons that permit larger vessels to dock.
The Habitat Ring was also fitted with six launch and maintenance bays for runabouts and shuttlecraft. The bays were positioned at sixty degree intervals and featured a retractable launch pad which raised up to allow easy launch of small crafts. The pad retracted into a bay capable of supporting two runabout-sized crafts or four shuttlecrafts and provided an area for maintenance and loading of different runabout modules.
Post Dominion War[]
After the end of the Dominion War in late 2375, DS9 was the site of the signing of the official declaration of peace between the powers of the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants. Before the treaty was signed, Sisko averted an attempt to assassinate the female changeling who was acting as the voice for the Dominion.
The onset of 2376 found the station now under the command of Colonel Kira Nerys. The crews of Deep Space 9, past and present, attended the ceremony on Bajor that officially inducted that world into the United Federation of Planets later that year.
On the final day of the year, Taran'atar, who was being mind-controlled by an outside source, attacked and severely injured Captain Kira and Lieutenant Ro Laren.
In sickbay, Dr. Bashir saved Captain Kira's life by replacing her heart, which had been pierced by Taran'atar's Kar'takin, with an artificial replacement, and Dr. Tarses used an innovative technique to repair Lieutenant Ro's spine.
Improvements and Upgrades[]
Upgrades began on the infrastructure of DS9 as well as the USS Defiant (NX-74205) to completely replace the station's ever uncooperative Cardassian computer system with a Federation ODN network that would no longer require makeshift patches between the two systems. The upgrades also saw additions to DS9's defences, including quantum torpedoes. Personnel were stretched throughout the upgrades, as only half of the station's usual 53-man contingent of Starfleet Corps of Engineers personnel remained on the station following the war.
Later years[]
In 2383, Deep Space 9 became a hub of commerce once more following the decision by President Nanietta Bacco to open the Bajoran sector and the Gamma Quadrant to exploration and trade missions within the region. During this time, however, life aboard the station was severely strained resulting from the turmoil that had engulfed the Federation in the secession of Andor and the effects it had upon the station's Andorian crewmembers.
The danger came to a head when DS9 came under attack shortly after the return of the Breen freighter Ren Fejin which was being escorted by the Mogai-class warbird .Additional Tzenkethi and Breen warships decloaked a short time afterward and also began an attack during a mass evacuation of DS9 following the discovery of multiple antimatter charges attached to the fusion core. After a series of detonations, which were initially believed not to be threatening to the station, Deep Space 9 lost the ability to eject its fusion reactors and it was believed that the station would have only a few moments left before it would be destroyed. Captain Ro Laren ordered that they transfer all available power to structural integrity to try to safeguard the 2,000 lives still aboard the station. Explosions were still observed to occur by the USS Robinson (NCC-71842) following its arrival at the battle scene.
Mere moments later, the station was destroyed. While the majority of the station's residents were evacuated by the Defiant, several runabouts, and the USS Canterbury, 630 Starfleet officers and 461 civilians were killed. Despite the large figure, Starfleet Commander-in-Chief Fleet Admiral Leonard James Akaar felt that the number was acceptable given the situation.
The rebuilt DS9[]
By 2385, DS9 had been rebuilt at the instigation of President Nanietta Bacco. The first of the new Frontier-class starbases, it contained enough details—the curves and proportions of its individual elements, its gray-white hull, the lettering and symbols that embellished it—to mark it as a Starfleet facility. Several instances of the space service’s skewed-chevron emblem emblazoned the x-ring, each occurrence marking the intersections with the vertical rings. The words "DEEP SPACE 9" read down the upper arcs of the y-ring on either side of the sphere, as did "UNITED FEDERATION OF PLANETS" on the upper arcs of the z-ring. The placement of the identification reflected the gravitational orientation of the station’s interior.
At normal capacity, the rebuilt DS9 supported a population of 13,000 and was capable of taking on the passengers and crew of dozens of ships that made dock. It was designed to be a starbase with full repair and construction facilities, as well as state of the art science labs. It was also designed to be the premier operations hub for all deep space assignments in the Bajoran sector.

The station was powered by eight mark-XIII fusion reactors, and had a further four as backups. It also served as headquarters for the Starfleet Judge Advocate General in the Bajoran System.
All these changes were in preparation for DS9's attachment to Starfleet's Vanguard Command in that same year as one of its field divisions. DS9 was designated headquarters of Starfleet's Denorios Command. As such, offices for the Sector Commander, the Deputy Sector Commander and other flag officers and line officers of Denorios Command, as well as supporting function rooms, could be found at the station's topmost level of the central spherical core.
DS9's former commander, Benjamin Sisko long returned to active duty commanding the Galaxy-class Command Cruiser USS Robinson, was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral and was designated Sector Commander of Denorios Command. Fleet Admiral Maximus Hunter himself traveled to DS9 to meet with Sisko and his former DS9 colleagues, and brought along with him the Katana-class Command Battleship USS Belligerent and the 55-starship strong Task Force Belligerent. Sisko was also designated Commanding Officer of the flagship and Flag Officer-in-Command of the task force. Both the Belligerent and the task force were to have DS9 as its home base and headquarters.
Functions[]
DS9 operated as a full-fledged starbase fulfilling the following important functions:
Science research – Its advanced scientific and medical laboratories would help sustain research. Although most of the scientific research activities of the Federation and Starfleet are done at the undersea complex of Denorios Base, most of stellar science researches are done in DS9. With its numerous and advanced sensor arrays, it serves as the stellar science research laboratory center of Starfleet in the region.
Diplomacy – Through its full diplomatic facilities composed of embassy suites, diplomatic housing, mediation halls, and conference rooms, it serves as the diplomatic hub of the Federation in the region.
Commerce and Trade – Through the Mall, the station plays host to hundreds of business establishments from more than a dozen different worlds.
Starship support - It would provide maintenance, repair, and support for starships in the sector and beyond. With the fourteen (14) Type-1 drydocks in station keeping around it, Station DS9 II was also capable of conducting full-scale starship construction for Starfleet and the Federation in that area of space.
Deep Space Exploration - Starfleet Command also utilized the station as a platform from which to stage exploratory missions out beyond the Bajoran system, considering that it floated at the outer reaches of known space.

Station features[]
The Rings - The rebuilt station was made up of three intersecting rings, perpendicular to each other, with a central spherical core. The Horizontal Ring was known as "X" ring, with the two vertical oriented rings known as "Y" and "Z". Each of the station’s rings was composed primarily of docking facilities, cargo holds, and repair bays, as well as sensor arrays, shield generators and weapons ports. The operations center, informally known as the Hub, was located at the upper intersection of the two vertical rings. The docking ring was connected to the sphere by six crossover bridges.
The Hub - The command complex of DS9, located at the upper intersection of the Y and Z vertical rings. Its disc shape features multiple levels including a centralized briefing table, a dedicated workstation for the Security Chief, and multiple other stations. The station commander's office is directly attached to it.
Corridors and Lifts - DS9 had spacious, brightly illuminated passages and corridors that were taller and wider than those found on starships, which were considered as substantial upgrades over those of its Cardassian-constructed predecessor, with their narrow, low-ceilinged dimensions and murky lighting. As with the corridors on the new station, the lifts improved upon those they replaced: well lighted, very roomy, and quiet.
The Park - A grand amalgam of engineering and nature, of technology and beauty, the Park occupied an arc of the station’s primary section, a central sphere. In addition to its use as a place for the crew’s recreation, it served as a functioning part of DS9’s life-support systems. Soil and stone and flora had been imported from Bajor to create the undulating, grass-covered hills, with rocky elevations rising up along about a quarter of the perimeter. Above, a simulated blue sky crowned the locale, although as the internal environment of the station progressed into the nighttime portion of its virtual twenty-six-hour day, the holographic morning and subsequent afternoon would fade, and the stars would become visible through the transparent hull overhead. The park had been intentionally positioned away from the three perpendicularly intersecting rings that encircled DS9’s main sphere, thereby affording evening visitors to the picturesque setting an unimpeded view of the nocturnal sky.
The Plaza - A broad, three-story-tall concourse with an expansive walkway located a deck below the Park that wrapped all the way around the circumference of the sphere, hugging the curvature of the hull. It featured an eclectic mix of establishments to support the station's population — civilian and Starfleet — as well as visitors and transients. There were restaurants, cafés, taverns, game rooms, sports fields, a library, computer and communications facilities, the Bajoran temple, a nondenominational place of worship, the valuation and auction house, the theater, Quark's Place, the Replimat, and a music and dance hall. It also four large atriums evenly laid out around that level. Public benches lined each atrium, and artwork of varying origin decorated the bulkheads. In the center of each atrium stood a black pyramidal base, above which hung a translucent holographic image of Deep Space 9, projected in three dimensions. Along the outer side, a transparent bulkhead bowed out around the Plaza and the residential deck below, offering views not only of surrounding space, but also of DS9’s X-axis ring, which swept past in a horizontal arc.
Residential Deck - Located a deck below the Plaza, which also wrapped all the way around the circumference of the sphere, is where most permanent living quarters for civilians and Starfleet personnel were located.
Sector General/Hospital - Also located on the Residential Deck, it occupied nearly a quarter of the circular deck on which it sat. The facility had a much larger capacity for patients than the old DS9's infirmary, featuring more than one operating theater, as well as a number of medical laboratories. At the entrance to the hospital, a wide opening with a circular desk set in the center. The words "SECTOR GENERAL" marched across the front of the desk in Federation Standard. Several security guards stood deeper inside, next to corridors that radiated away from the entrance like the spokes of a wheel.

Station defense[]
DS9 has an arsenal of 48 Type-XII rotary-mounted pulse phaser cannons, 48 Type-XII stationary-mounted phaser emitters, 12 Type-XII slide-mounted phaser emitters, and 48 torpedo launchers. The station also has a payload of 100 transphasic torpedoes, 1,500 quantum torpedoes and 3,500 high-yield photon torpedoes.
The primary weapons feature of the station was the retractable defense sail. The sails are placed at 30 degree intervals around the X-ring’s dorsal and ventral sides and housed most of the tactical systems of the station, including Type XII phaser turrets, Type XII phaser arrays, rotary phaser cannons, torpedo launchers, and tractor beam emitters. These emplacements provided a nearly 360 degree sphere for defense, only interrupted by targets obscured at close range by the other platforms of the station.
Each sail tower was armed with two torpedo launcher tubes, two rotary-mounted phaser cannons, two stationary-mounted phaser emitters, one slide-mounted phaser turret and a tractor beam emitter.
With this firepower, DS9 was a virtual floating fortress.
DS9 was protected by enhanced, regenerative, triple-redundant, reinforced, multiphasic, multispectrum, unimatrix defensive shields and ablative hull armor. It was also installed with thoron shield generators that provided a seamless energy casing around the starbase, on the inner sides of the rings, with a separate shell around the Hub. The thoron-based screen interfered with DS9’s long-range communications and sensors, but functioned as a protective envelope far stronger than typical shields, defending against not only energy weapons and transporter beams, but also actual material objects. While it would not render Deep Space 9 impregnable, it could allow the starbase to withstand some attacks better and longer than traditional shields.
Personnel complement[]
The rebuilt DS9 has a full Starfleet complement of 2,500 personnel. 400 of whom were officers and 2,100 were enlisted. In addition, the station was inhabited by 10,000 civilians from the different worlds nearby.

If needed, the auxiliary craft complement, with their respective weapons systems, which were substantial in their own right, could provide additional defense to the station.
Rapid Reaction Force[]
DS9 was the home port of two starships that were attached to the Rapid Reaction Force, the Ambassador III-class Heavy Cruiser variant USS Zhukov and the Diligent-class Tactical Frigate USS Tughril. While the Tughril has a designated docking port on the x-ring of the station, the Zhukov has its own drydock in station keeping to DS9, which doubles as its designated berth.

Alternate flagship[]
DS9 was the home port of the alternate flagship of Task Force Belligerent, the Odyssey-class Command Battleship USS Formidable. It was the primary rapid response force, or mission specialist, of Task Force Belligerent.
