The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest galaxy to our Milky Way, being approximately 2,500,000 light years away at it's closest point. It is speculated, that Andromeda had collided with two other galaxies in the past.
History
In 2268, members of the Kelvan race from the Andromeda galaxy took over the USS Enterprise and tried to travel there, but were stopped by the Enterprise's crew. (TOS: "By Any Other Name")
In 2420, the USS Nomad started exploring the Androemda galaxy. (NOM: "Welcome to Andromeda, Part I")
Lifeforms
The Andromeda Galaxy is so twisted and vast that it's no wonder that any life can survive, but the Saer'nar are one of the only lifeforms from Andromeda. (PIO: "On a Knife Edge")
